Classic Sauvignonasse

Sauvignonasse_small.jpgWinery: Simčič Marjan
Region:
Slovenian Collio (Brda), Friuli
Locale:
Ceglo
Appellation: Goriška Brda
Designation: ZPG

Site: From the Zegla and Podgredič vineyards, at 150-250 meters. Vines are 26-46 years of age and face SW. Grapes are hand-harvested, with just a bit of surmaturité.

Grapes: 100% Friulano (formerly called Tocai Friulano), locally known as Sauvignonasse. No relationship with Sauvignon Blanc!

Vinification and Aging: Maceration for 12 hours, fermentation in stainless steel. Aged in stainless steel tanks for 8 months on the fine lees.

Notes: In 2006 or 7, Hungary won the exclusive right to the name Tokay and all its derivatives (including Tocai, which was widely in use in Friuli for the Friulano grape). Many producers use alternatives to the official Friulano. Marjan’s version is a seriously structured wine, with notes of balsamic herbs and almonds. A great aperitif, and enormously versatile when it comes to pasta.
