Cornas "Les Chailles"

Alain_Voge__cornas_label.jpgWinery: Alain Voge
Region:
Rhône - Nord (Northern Rhône)
Locale:
Cornas, France
Appellation:  Cornas Controlée
Designation: AOC

Site: The 40-year-old vines are grown at the foot of granite slopes in Cornas, with soils more fertile here than in higher areas, bestowing the vines with vitality and producing slightly higher yields. Proximity to the limestone mountain range named Arlettes to the north explains the presence of siliceous concretions specific to the Trias area, called chailles, giving a unique siliceous concentration and taste.

Grapes: 100% Syrah, harvested manually

Fermentation and Aging: Cultivated using organic and biodynamic viticulture. After de-stemming, fermentation with natural yeasts and maceration for several weeks in stainless steel vats, with cap-punching and pumping-over done twice a day. Aged for 18 months in casks; no new wood.

Notes: Notes of wild herbs, peppered meats, garrigue, and sweet currants and blackberries. Full-bodied richness and incredible purity. Should drink well for 15 years of more.
