In a few words: The flagship wine of the estate; this is a wine for your cellar. One of the great wines of Italy.
Site: The Piaggia vineyard; about 3 hectares and the original vineyard of the estate, planted in the early 70s. In addition, the best parcels of Il Sasso and Poggio de'Colli are included in Piaggia.
Grapes: 70% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot. Hand picked in small containers.
Fermentation and Aging: Like all the red wines produced at Piaggia, fermentation with the natural yeast to preserve the vineyard's terroir, in this case for from 18 up to 25-28 days, depending on vintage conditions. Racked to French barriques for the ML fermentation and aging, with a couple of rackings over a period of 18-24 months of total aging in barrel. Portion of new wood is at most 10%. After bottling, at least 6 months of rest in the bottle before release.
Notes: An almost impenetrable ruby red color. Aromas of ripe fruit, embellished with elegant hints of tobacco, chocolate and sweet spices. On the palate it expresses a powerful structure but also, with a measured balance, soft fruit against the round and mature tannins. The finish is long and fruity. Pairs well with red meat and game, mature cheeses and quality cured meats. Piaggia Riserva belongs in any serious Italian wine collector's cellar.
Production about 30K bottles.
