Region: Veneto
Locale: Tregnago
Appellation: Amarone della Valpolicella
Designation: DOCG
In a few words: Warm and powerful with a lusciously rich elegance.
Site: Vineyards are located in Tregnago, at an altitude between 350-560 meters above sea level. Glacial morainic soil composition. Vines are at average 12 years of age, trained in the Guyot method. Harvest during the second week of September, with careful selection of grapes. Following harvest, the long appassimento (grape drying) process happens in traditional family-owned fruttaio premises sited in the hillside vineyards themselves.
Grapes: Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella
Fermentation and Aging: The grapes remain in the drying facility for a few months during the wintertime allowing a higher concentration of sugars. The grapes are destemmed and pressed, and the must fermented for 30 days at temperatures between 20-24° C. The wine is aged for 36 months in barrique; it is then blended in cylindroconical wood vessels, where it remains for another 6 months. After bottling it is aged for at least 12 months before release.
Notes: A deep crimson red sets the mood for this wine. The nose is a touch reserved, so give the wine a decant. You'll be rewarded with sumptuous aromas of ripened fruit such as sour cherry, black currant and juicy black plums, accompanied by spicy notes of cinnamon, licorice and roasted coffee. The palate is warm and decadent, with well-integrated tannins balanced with juicy, mouth-watering acidity. Lingering, delicious notes of dried berries and figs on the long finish. Gorgeous with braised and slow-cooked meat, venison or game dishes, or pasta with rich tomato sauce and wild mushrooms.
