The history of this fourth-generation winery began in 1925, when Carlo Cottini founded the first family farm, cultivating not only vineyards but other fruits such as cherries, plums, apricots and olives, as well as raising cattle. It was the second and third generation who made the pivotal leap towards viticulture and began to specialize in wine production. Carlo’s son, Raffaello, built his winery in Fumane, in Valpolicella, where the family has its roots. In 1965 he bought the Caprino Veronese estate, where the winery is located still.
Diego Cottini has continued the family tradition by purchasing new land in Eastern Valpolicella and in Lugana. Together with his wife Annalberta, he has concretized the small family business and brought it to international markets. Diego is the mind and soul of the company, while Annalberta is the heart. She was the first true supporter of the company's philosophy of sustainability and biodiversity in the vineyard.
Monte Zovo became the first in the world to certify for the use of biodiversity-friendly protocols in accordance with the Biodiversity Friend standards and, in 2020, was awarded the Best of Wine Tourism award for sustainable practices. The full property is in conversion to organic agriculture and the facilities are entirely energy self-sufficient. The winery’s lightweight glass initiative uses 30% less glass, reducing raw material use by approximately 17,000 tons as well as reducing its carbon footprint.
