Winery: Azienda Agricola Giovanna Madonia a Bertinoro
Region: Emilia Romagna
Locale: Villa Modonia, Bertinoro (Romagna)
Farming: Uses sustainable practices
Designation: DOCG
Site: Vineyard site is about 350m in altitude. Newer plantings of Albana are trained using guyot system, but the old vines are planted to Albarello, or head-pruned. Yields are extremely small: about 37 HL/Ha.
Grapes: 100% Albana, picked by hand, usually in the second half of September
Fermentation and Aging: Grapes are softly pressed, and the free run juice (60% of the potential yield) is fermented without the skins in stainless steel fermenters.
Notes: Aromas of peach, white melon, exotic fruits. When Albana di Romagna was made Italy’s first DOCG in 1987, it was widely seen as a joke, proving how politicized the selection was. After all, it is generally a relatively simple white wine, and what about Barolo? Brunello? Barbaresco? Chianti? However, one must taste Neblina and one will understand that this is truly a great white wine. Indeed the 2014 won a coveted Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso – the first ever Tre Bicchieri earned by a dry-styled Albana! Don’t drink it too cold, and open it a good hour before serving – it wouldn’t hurt to decant it.
