Winery: Cantina Bolzano / St. Magdalena
Region: Alto Adige
Locale: Bolzano, Italy
Appellation: Alto Adige
Designation: DOC
In a few words: The "Queen of Schiava"... This is a really special bottle of wine. Somehow it manages to have unexpected flavors and yet is a real crowd pleaser. Joe says ... "Even the most jaded taster will be blown away by this wine. I LOVE introducing people to it."
Site: A hamlet just north of Bolzano, Sanct Magdalena, is home to the vineyard for this wine and gives it its name. It's a sub-appellation of Alto Adige DOC which includes only 600 hectares. Light morainal soils.
Grapes: 90% Schiava and 10% Lagrein
Fermentation and Aging: Schiava and Lagrein are harvested and fermented together; a part of the wine matures in big oak barrels
Notes: Put a little bit of a chill on this wine before serving, maybe 60° F. Pair it the same way you might a Cru Beaujolais.
