Château de la Terrière

Terriere_logo.jpgChâteau de la Terrière totals 25 hectares, located in the heart of Beaujolais: Brouilly. The Chateau, one of the oldest in the region, was built upon ancient Roman foundations in the 16th Century in Cercié, and sits near Mt. Brouilly - an ancient volcano looming 1000 meters high in plain view south of the estate.

The estate's vineyards include 12 hectares in AOP Cru Brouilly, all of a single piece, plus 5 hectares in the AOP Cru of Régnié, in the lieu dite of Sibérie, 2 hectares in AOP Cru Fleurie, 3 hectares in AOP Cru Moulin-à-Vent, and 6 hectares in AOP Bourgogne Pinot Noir.

The vines at Château de la Terrière range from 45 to 70 and more years old. In Brouilly and Beaujolais-Villages, vineyards are south-facing, halfway up the side of a deep, dry pink granite hill. In Moulin-à-Vent, on manganese and iron oxide-rich soils.

The Chateau, once belonging to successive generations of lords, was purchased in 2003 by the Barbet family - a family with roots going back 200 years in the wine tradition. Grégory Barbet, today the manager of the estate, is the 9th generation of winegrowers, and is also the owner of Domaine de la Pirolette in Saint-Amour. Yoan Pitoiset is the winemaker of Château de la Terrière and is also consultant oenologist for several other estates in Beaujolais. In 2010, the estate became a pioneer when it planted the Pinot Noir grape in the Pierres Dorées area.

The vines are grown according to sustainable farming methods. The soils are worked with machines, with minimum intervention. Everything is done precisely and accurately, to enhance the expression of the soils and respect the vines. The approach is traditional with the harvests done by hand. The bunches are put in trays to avoid squashing and to make sorting the grapes easier.

The team is restructuring the vineyard step by step, vintage after vintage, to go towards better environmental practices. 6 hectares are now in conversion to Organic Farming.
