Winery: Bodegas Campos Reales
Region: La Mancha
Locale: El Provencio, provence of Cuenca
Appellation: DO La Mancha
Site: The high, arid central plain of La Mancha. Average elevation is 5-600 meters. Soils are red-brown sandy clay with limestone and chalk. Vineyards are planted en vaso (head pruned) in order to keep them low to the ground to minimize evaporation.
Grapes: 100% Tempranillo, a portion from vines up to 70 years old, planted on original rootstock.
Fermentation and Aging: Fermented in stainless steel, aged in barriques of American oak for 3 months, bottled, and released to the market the following year.
Notes: Selección uses a higher proportion of old vines, and enjoys 3 months of aging in partially new American oak barriques, American oak being the traditional choice of Spanish vignerons. Just a little more serious than the Tempranillo joven, this "semi-crianza" will please a very discerning pallet, yet carries a price tag that makes it easy to buy. Bring it to the next dinner party – guests will love it!
