Region:
Lipari
Locale:
Lipari, Italy
Appellation: Sicilia
Designation: IGT

In a few words: A strong and determined character, as vibrant as the fire of the volcanoes and sunsets of its homeland. This wine splendidly expresses the union between the volcano and the sea.

Site: Sandy, volcanic, deep, fertile and rich in minerals. A Mediterranean climate; temperate, warm, windy, with great temperature changes throughout the day.

Grapes: Corinto Nero 70%, Nero d'Avola 30%

Corinto, a varietal of Greek origin, is grown only in Lipari. All grapes are grown using Alberello technique (free standing bush), and harvested by hand. This non-interventive vineyard technique is truly both difficult and rewarding, yielding much less fruit of a much higher quality.

Fermentation and Aging: Crushing of whole grapes and grapes without the stalks. Long maceration with grape skins and without temperature control. Wine is drawn off from the vat and transferred to barrels to allow malolactic fermentation. After about eight months it is drawn off in a steel vat. No must clarification, only static settling. Wine is decanted repeatedly to obtain natural clarification and then placed in bottles. 8 months refinement in the bottle.

Notes: Deep purple red with violet reflections - a gorgeous wine in the glass. On the nose, cherry and spicy aromas blend with an intriguing hint of black currant for an enveloping aromatic complexity. Juicy and fresh, is flavored with red fruit nuances in addition intriguing scents of spices, damp earth and moss. Excellent with white and red meat, also fish dishes. Ageing potential 8-10 years or more.
